A plethora of interesting events to report on this week!
The Without Walls (WOW) Festival is in full swing, and theater, dance and music performances will continue until Sunday.
The Pacific Arts Movement’s 11th Spring Showcase opened yesterday; Film screenings and other related events will continue until next Thursday.
Today (Friday), performances of the play Once begin at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, and performances will continue until May 7. Ukrainian “ethno chaos” band DakhaBrakha will perform at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center down in La Jolla. At the Blue Agave Nightclub, Alacranes Musical will perform Mexican Duranguense music.
Saturday, the Chinese Historical Society and Museum will host a virtual talk on How to Find Your 2,600-Year-Old Chinese Family Roots. The marvelous Linda Vista Multicultural Fair & Parade will take place featuring cultural exhibits, international food, performances, and a parade. At the international cottages, the House of Spain will celebrate acclaimed Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes with music, dance, colorful costumes, and food. Downtown the San Diego Taco & Beer Festival will feature musical performances, tacos galore, and beer tastings from local and regional breweries. An Art Show and Benefit for Ukraine will take place at Ashton Gallery with a portion of the artwork sales proceeds going to relief efforts for Ukrainians. The Scottish group Dunedin Consort will perform at St. James by the Sea in La Jolla. Popular Mexican singer/songwriter Pancho Barraza will perform at SDSU outdoor theater.
Sunday the play Mother of the Maid opens at the Moxie Theater. Performances will continue until May 22nd. The 30th Annual Multi-Cultural Earth Day will take place at the Worldbeat Center in Balboa Park with performances, exhibits, a seed bank, food, and more. The House of England will host its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages. At Normal Heights Community Dev, there will be a Flamenco Show along with a workshop and flamenco tunes to dance the night away.
Tuesday, At Point Loma Nazarene University, Warwick's will host Don Winslow as he discusses his new book, City on Fire. At the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, Victoria Martino will lecture on Russian art impresario Sergei Diaghilev. Composer and Japanese koto artist Yumi Kurosawa will perform for UCSD's Art Power.
Next Thursday, at the San Ysidro Library, Señor Arturo will offer a Spanish/English Bilingual Storytime for kids. At the Museum of Photographic Arts, Vanguard Culture and the Rosin Box will present the film The History of Joy, inspired by The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. You can enjoy the museum's exhibits and partake in cocktails and a silent auction before the screening and participate in a Q&A after the film. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will present a virtual screening of the film Guida Romantica a Posti Perduti (Romantic Guide to Lost Places).
Next Friday the 3-day International Mobile Film Festival will begin at the Marina Village Conference Center and will screen 6 feature films and 25 shorts along with a host of other activities. The California Center for the Arts are kicking off a once-a-month Música en la Plaza free concert series. This month's performers are local Afro-Cuban band Fecha. Comedy troupe Crazy Woke Asians will be tickling funny-bones at the Laugh Factory.
Next Saturday and Sunday, Old Town will host its annual Cinco de Mayo Festival. While you are at the festival, you can mosey over to Flor & Seed Coffee Roasters to check out their bilingual Children's Book Festival. At Petco Park the Tequila and Taco Music Festival will take place. Also on Saturday and Sunday, at St Peter's Episcopal Church, you can take in a production of the Mozart opera Don Giovanni.
Next Saturday, the 17th Annual Student Shakespeare Festival will take place at Heritage Park. The San Diego Archaeological Center will host its annual BBQ in Escondido. The House of Finland will host its annual Lawn Program (note this is on Saturday, not Sunday) in Balboa Park. The always-awesome Allison Adams Tucker, inspired by Women’s History Month and Jazz Appreciation Month. will present her annual Women in Jazz concert at the Quartyard, featuring Holly Hoffman, Melonie Grinnell, Evona Wascinski, Monette Marino, Samantha Lincoln, and, of course, Allison herself. Yiddishland California presents a Jewish Musical Cabaret by Lisa Fishman featuring Yiddish, English, and Ladino songs. Yale Strom and Hot Pstromi will be playing at Dizzy's to celebrate the group's 40th anniversary.
Next Sunday, you can celebrate Dutch Kongins Dag (King's Day) at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The House of Poland will present their annual Lawn Program at Balboa Park. Father of Mexican blues rock, Javiez Bátiz will perform at Winton's in Ocean Beach. At Conrad Prebys Concert Hall at UCSD, The Mystery of Tanbur will be a night of live Kurdish music featuring AliAkbar Moradi, Arash Moradi, Kourosh Moradi, and Mehdi Bagheri. Crazy Rich Asians will be screened by the Rooftop Cinema Club at the downtown Hyatt. The will be a Celebration of Cuban Music at the Rady Shell featuring bands direct from Cuba: Los Van Van, Havana D’Primera and (direct from NYC) DJ Andy.
